A question I get asked so often among my couples who book me for their wedding or elopement is digital vs film wedding photography. The great thing about working with me is we can do an all-digital gallery, an all-film gallery, or a mix of both!
One of my favorite sessions that I think truly showcases both is Alex and Jett’s elopement in Las Vegas and Red Rock Canyon. There was so much love between the two, you could feel it in the air and in their energy. I literally started crying when I went back through and edited the gallery! So with that all being said, lets dive into digital vs film wedding photography, and the differences between the two.
Film and digital photography both offer a unique look and style. Film photography provides a soft and romantic look that can often feel timeless and vintage. Many of the couples I work with choose to add-on film, with some even choosing an all-film gallery! Digital photography offers more flexibility and sharper images. I love both, but have certainly fallen in love with film photography! Check out images below that showcase digital vs film wedding photography!
Left: Digital
Right: Film
Now, lets dive into the benefits of adding on film to your wedding or even having an all-film wedding gallery.
Film photos truly do offer that timeless medium and soft vintage feel to your photos. If this is something you love, then film may just be perfect for you.
Film photos feel timeless and make the best keepsakes. What’s even more cool is that your film scans are uploaded to your gallery just as your digital images are. No worries about film photos fading. You can have them to cherish FOREVER too!
Film is actually pretty expensive! Because of this, each and every photo I take does actually cost money. Because of this, every single image is intentional. You will likely remember the exact moment you posed for the photo because we are being super intentional with it. Digital cameras can take several photos within seconds, unlike a film camera!
Something that often interests couples when it comes to film wedding photography is the rich, true-to-color and the depth that you can get with film. Natural lighting and the softness is also a favorite among couples.

Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of film wedding photography, let’s dive into the benefits of digital wedding photography.
Digital cameras have the capability of taking several images within seconds unlike a film camera. Because of this, you are going to get more images out of digital.
No, I don’t mean you’re going to get your wedding photos instantly if you choose digital. But what I mean is that images are stored directly on my camera after I take them (unedited of course). Every once in awhile when I get a shot that I just want to show my couple, I can do this by showing them the back of my camera! You can’t do that with film as I have to send your film scans to the lab!
When it comes to digital images, things can be more easily edited, much more so than what your film images can be. With digital, adjustments to lighting, colors, and little details can be edited. With film, we don’t have as much editing capability as we do with digital.
Film wedding photography is an add-on because film is more costly than digital. Film rolls are expensive, as well as film development. With that being said, it’s not CRAZY expensive to add on to your package, so don’t let this deter you from considering film!

Now that we’ve gone over both digital and film, what are you choosing for your wedding or elopement? Keep in mind that most couples choose to add-on film for the best of both worlds! In your gallery, you’ll get both digital and film images, separated so you can easily see both.
